Buying a Pram Newborn

Parents and caregivers can rely on pushchairs and prams to be versatile and multi-functional. They're the co-pilots of the journey of your child.

A pram newborn is a must for newborns and babies. It has the most solid, sturdy carrycot with soft and secure walls.

A pram comes with a bassinet. However, it can be converted into a stroller compact if the baby is ready.

Safety

Newborns must be protected as much as is possible. A stroller or pram equipped with safety features will ensure that your baby is in a safe and comfortable environment during travel. The basic requirements for any pram or stroller are a functioning brake, a five-point safety harness (2 shoulder straps, 2 waist straps and a crotch strap) and an adjustable wrist tether strap for the person who is pushing the pram. Make sure the pram you select is in compliance with these requirements.

Look for a pram that allows your baby to ride in the recommended lie-flat position. This position supports your baby and helps prevent a dangerous spinal curve which could lead to spinal issues. It also reduces the risk of SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome) or asphyxiation, by keeping the airways free. Most prams that can be used from birth will have the seat unit, which will recline to a lay-flat pram mode for babies younger than the age of one and transform into a pushchair unit for older children.

The suspension on a pram is important because it can affect the smoothness of the ride. A pram with many suspensions is likely to be more expensive but it could be worth the cost of this feature if you intend to use your pram daily for a couple of years or longer.

You should always take the time to read the instruction manual and examine the warning labels for your stroller or pram. Some prams also feature an extra bassinet, newborn inset or stroller seat, so you can easily switch between sitting and sleeping modes based on your baby's requirements. This is often referred to as a "travel system" and is the first setup you should test out with your newborn.

Look for a pram with two shoulder straps (ideally with padding) and a sturdy five-point safety harness that fits your bub's body safely. Make sure there aren't any gaps or loose places where fingers could become trapped. Also, ensure that the buckles are safe for older children to use. You should also consider whether you want an adult-facing pram. It is ideal for keeping an ear on your child, and makes them feel more secure by seeing their parents.

You will also be able to keep changing and shopping bags inside the basket beneath (although keep in mind that loading the pram with too much weight could cause it to tip over).
